Matthias Maute's reputation as an orchestra leader and conductor has grown impressively during the past few years. Since founding Ensemble Caprice as a chamber music group in 1989, he has developed the ensemble to become increasingly known as a Baroque orchestra that performs with distinguished singer soloists and a choir. Several recent Caprice concerts with this configuration have been recorded for broadcasts by CBC/Radio-Canada.

Since founding Ensemble Caprice as a chamber music group in 1989, he has developed the ensemble to become increasingly known as a Baroque orchestra that performs with distinguished singer soloists and a choir. Several recent Caprice concerts with this configuration have been recorded for broadcasts by CBC/Radio-Canada.

Before establishing his career and achieving an international reputation as a recorder player, flutist and composer, Matthias became interested in developing his leadership skills at the age of sixteen, when he began to conduct choirs. In addition to his work with Ensemble Caprice, Matthias directed a performance of Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks for the grand finale of the Montreal Baroque Festival in 2005-a concert that was also broadcast live nationally by CBC. In the United States, Matthias has been the Director of The Manhattan Recorder Orchestra since its formation in 2003. The orchestra, which is based in New York and has twenty-one members, has given numerous concerts including a performance at the Montreal Recorder Festival.

Since winning First Prize in the soloist category at the prestigious Early Music Competition in Bruges, Belgium in 1990, Matthias' career as an instrumentalist has also flourished. He appears regularly at festivals across the world with Ensemble Caprice, Rebel and as a soloist. In 2003 and 2005, he was the featured recorder virtuoso at the Boston Early Music Festival and made his debut at New York City's Lincoln Center during 2008. His compositions hold an important place in the world of contemporary recorder music and are published by Breitkopf & Härtel, Amadeus, Moeck and Carus. Matthias has made some twenty recordings. He teaches at McGill University in Montreal.
